About Us, Today

Sydney Thistle continues to live true to its history, remaining as a civilian pipe band and striving to preserve and promote the Band’s Scottish heritage through participation in pipe band competitions, highland gatherings and all other types of social events.

Sydney Thistle currently has about 30 active pipers and drummers.  Our members come from all over Greater Sydney, from Wollongong and from the Central Coast.  Our shared goal is to strive to look our best and deliver high quality music and drill displays every time we compete and perform.

Although the Band today focuses a lot of it's time on preparation for pipe band competitions, we also can provide a full band, a mini band or individual players to play at public and private events.  Over the last 5 years we have played at the Sydney Opera House, morning television, corporate events, birthday parties, weddings, community parades and sporting fixtures.  Where we can perform is limited only by your imagination!

The band meets once a week (Monday 8pm-10pm) at the North Ryde School of Arts for practice.  We foster a friendly, supportive environment in which to improve our musicianship and performance skills and to socialise with each other.

We welcome inquiries for membership from pipers and drummers of all levels.  And from non-playing participants as well.  If you're not sure if Thistle is right for you, why not come along, meet us and have a listen first!
